Churchill's Fine Cigars has closed their downtown Phoenix location, a sudden move made over the weekend and that was announced to customers via e-mail on Monday morning.
The store did not cite a reason for the closure in the e-mail, and Churchill's general manager Todd McNett said that the situation "just wasn't working out," but declined to go into further detail. Inventory was cleared out over the weekend and the space is largely vacant.
The downtown location was Churchill's sixth location in the Phoenix metro area, joining their other locations in the Central Phoenix Camelback Corridor, Scottsdale, Ahwatukee, Glendale and Tempe. The store opened in early 2010 and became a haven for those that live, work and play downtown as a place to enjoy a cigar. It developed a loyal following among business professionals and had recently launched a "Downtown Cigar Club" that met once per month to enjoy cigars and networking.
Churchill's also had a store in Cave Creek that lasted less than a year, as they took over the space that had previously been Mojito Cigar Lounge before selling that operation back to the store's original owner.
