Church World Service urges Obama to support humanitarian programs

Church World Service is urging President Obama to support humanitarian programs that fight world hunger.

In a letter sent yesterday, CWS stated, "We urge you to seek increased funding for these programs, which bring new hope to communities around the world and contribute to a more secure world for all people."

U.S. government programs that fight global hunger, such as Food for Peace, Feed the Future and the McGovern-Dole international school meals initiative, are at risk of having funding cut by Congress.

Should funding be reduced for these programs it would limit the ability of aid groups to fight hunger in many countries including war-torn Afghanistan, South Sudan and Syria.

CWS is also urging a direct attack on child malnutrition, "to reduce the number of stunted children by 70 million by 2025," and to support small farmers worldwide.
