Church of the Never Wrong is the latest from Sons, and friends

We all know that the Chicago area is the mecca for acoustic/folk musicians in this country. That's why we produced the Second Sunday concert series in 2007, and that's why we write this column.

In their latest CD, "Church of the Never Wrong," local favorites Sons of the Never Wrong prove that all over again.

The CD features Sons, of course (Sue Demel, Deb Lader, and Bruce Roper, but you knew that), but also an all-star cast of some of the best local singers and musicians. Featured on one or more songs are Michael Smith, Jenny and Robin Bienemann, Andrew and Casey Calhoun, Don Stirnberg, Al Day, Megan McDonough, Mark Dvorak, Eddie Holstein, Michael Miles, Corky Siegel, and lots of others.

Over the decades of writing the Chicago Folk Music Examiner, we have remained neutral in the area of religion. We've always liked the music, though. However, Eddie Holstein singing "Jesus on the Main Line."? That's thinking out of the box.

The backup band, the "Nuns of the Never Wrong Chapel Band" is Chris Walz, Michael Allemana, June Shellene, Al Ehrich, John Abbey, Tony Dale, Bob Egan, and Randy Lee. This leads us get an image of Chris Walz in a nun's habit and a mandolin. Now there's a word picture.

We could say that there is a high level of vocal performance and musicianship on this CD, but, that would be like saying there are a lot of french fries at McDonald's. Some things are just a given.

Keeping it local, "Church of the Never Wrong" was recorded, mixed, etc, by Bruce Roper. The cover art is by Sue Demel. The CD was released through Waterbug Records. Check it out at sons.com or Waterbug.com.o

Sons of the Never Wrong will be performing at Davenprt's this Friday, January 20, 2012, and at Stained Glass Coffee House Saturday. There just might be some copies available on those dates.

Gary first became interested in folk music in the early 60's, when his older brother came home from college with Gibson/Camp and Limeliter albums. Tuber produced the popular Second Sunday concert series, and continues to be an avid folk junkie.
