A decade has passed since a Roman Catholic priest in Chicago was accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl. While seeking religious counsel, a resident of Chicago’s Northwest Side was sexually assaulted over a period of several months by a Roman Catholic Priest.
Sleeva Raju Policetti was born in India but was an active Roman Catholic priest in Chicago in May of 2002. Evading arrest from Chicago police, Policetti was able to board a flight to Frankfurt, Germany.
Policetti then sought haven in his native village outside of Hyderabad and contacted the Chicago police department to speak with the lead detective on his case. The Chicago Tribune quoted him as saying, “he was uncertain about returning to Chicago to face charges.”
Even after India’s Central Intelligence Bureau arrested Policetti and a U.S. federal warrant called for him to be extradited to face charges, Policetti still remains at large. Instead, church officials are keeping him under the guardianship of the bishop in Hyderabad.
