(Vik Sahay interview, Part 2 of 3)
So who does Vik turn to for fight coaching expertise?
"In Toronto, I work with this guy named Johnny Khalbenn, who's been a pro boxer for 20 years at this place called Cabbagetown Boxing Club so he would put me through the madness of that - The half hour, borderline sprints outside then the skipping, the heavy bags, the sparring, and then the sparring for real. I have been hit very hard, very often."
Who else is on Vik's famous fitness trainer list?
"And then I worked out with a guy in L.A., Deon Williams, at the Hollywood Boxing Gym. He's a fantastic coach and it was very similar but even more focused on technique...The trainer I work out with now is not a boxing trainer, Lalo Fuentes, here in L.A. and in Toronto there's this guy Travis Anderson who was a pro football player and I do a lot of track work with him," he says of Travis' tailor-made fitness routine.
On what Vik's trainer, Travis Anderson, has him do for total fitness...
"A lot of drills, pylons, [jumping] boxes, kettlebell, medicine ball, functional training, running intervals and with Lalo it's the same deal. It's non-stop moving and he uses this thing called a Freeze Technique where you kind of pause for a second at every point in the move and it breaks down your muscle fibers and burns more calories in less time. It's rough...
Vik's advice for what to do if you don't have access to personal trainers...
"What I would do if I didn't have anything is I would just run," Vik says, adding that there's no such thing as inaccessible fitness. "I would go outside, you don't need anything else, and I would literally do a 20-minute run every day then build that up. Then shuffle it," he says. Adding, "I wish there was an easy trick to it, but there isn't."
