The light, relatively inexpensive Chromebooks are shaking up the PC market. PC World reported on Dec. 23, 2013, Chromebooks have captured 20 percent of the commercial notebook market. Analyst firm NPD says sales of Chromebooks have gone from virtually no market in 2012 to greater than 20 percent of the U.S. commercial PC market, while sales of Windows PCs and Macs have remained flat.

Chromebooks were once sold primarily by just Acer and Samsung. Recently Dell, HP, and others have started selling Chromebooks. NPD reported Chromebook sales were negligible in 2012 but within one year climbed to 21 percent of the market. Sales of Macs have actually declined, with combined sales of desktops and notebooks down by 7 percent. Although Windows tablet sales have tripled, they began with a very small base.

Chromebooks may be killing off the Macbook, according to Computerworld. Chromebook sales have been growing quickly while sales of Windows notebooks and Apple notebooks are falling. Overall, Chromebooks have accounted for 9.6 percent of all desktop, notebook, and tablet sales via the commercial market over the past year, in comparison to 0.2 percent the previous year. Windows notebooks accounted for 34.1 percent of sales, which was down from 42.9 percent the previous year. Apple notebooks accounted for just 1.8 percent of sales, in comparison to 2.6 percent the the previous year. MandelMall.com offers Chromebooks for sale online from Amazon.
