Hewlett-Packard Company’s new HP Chromebook 11 is available, according to Yahoo! News on Tuesday. The laptop’s most notable feature is the inexpensive price. The laptop described as being having an Internet-centric Chrome operating system - which has many of the features found in a model that costs around $1,000 more – is conveniently priced for consumers at $279.
While the price is comparable to other Chromebooks that use the Chrome OS, the latest one has features in its design that are often found on more expensive devices such as the Chromebook Pixel which more than $1,000 more.
Specific differences from well-known Mac and Windows laptops are that the Chromebook has a continuous Internet connection for utilizing Gmail, Google Docs and other such online services. While many of the apps do not directly run on the Chromebook, they do run over the Internet. The new Chromebook also has little storage because photos, documents, and other such files are to be stored online instead.
In its design, the Chromebook is plastic and noticeably absent are sharp corners and screw holes that are found in similar products. To keep the device sturdy, there is magnesium under the plastic. Quite unique is the location of the speaker on this device. It is placed under the keyboard so that sound comes toward the user instead of from the sides or back as found in other devices. It is measured at 11.5 inches diagonally and only weighs approximately 2 pounds. The device is available in black or white with the white model having colored accents around the keyboard and under the device – in blue, green, red, and yellow.
Another nice feature is that the Chromebook 11 uses the same micro-USB charger that is used with other mobile devices rather than a separate charger like other laptops have.
As one can assume, some features had to be dropped from the Chrome Pixel to make the Chromebook 11 so much less expensive. In doing that, Hewlett-Packard dropped the touch screen and admits that the resolution of the display is not as sharp as the Pixel’s resolution.
The Chromebook 11 went on sale Tuesday at selected retailers and Google’s Play store.
