Christoph Waltz wins Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2013 Oscars

In an early surprise, actor Christoph Waltz took home the statue for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2013 Oscars Sunday night (Feb. 24).

Waltz won for his role in the controversial Quentin Tarantino movie "Django Unchained." It is his second nomination and second win in the same category; Waltz previously won in 2009 for his supporting role in "Inglourious Basterds." In "Django Unchained," Waltz played Dr. King Schultz, a German bounty hunter in the pre-Civil War South who buys a slave to assist him with his work.

After sending his respect to his fellow nominees -- Alan Arkin, Robert DeNiro, Tommy Lee Jones and Philip Seymour Hoffman -- Waltz lionized Tarantino in his acceptance speech. "We participated in a hero's journey -- the hero being Quentin," he said. "You scaled the mountain because you're not afraid of it. You slayed the dragon because you're not afraid of it. You crossed through fire because it's worth it."
