Christmastime wild game, cheese in Frankenmuth, Michigan

See also

Frankenmuth, Michigan is easy to walk around -- even in the snow and cold! -- and they have a number of local, artisan and German-style food shops. I traveled there this week and found a good selection of meats and cheeses to purchase . . . most made in-house or locally, some with German recipes.

Frankenmuth Cheese Haus 561 S. Main St., Frankenmuth, MI 48734, sells all kinds of award-winning cheeses, cheese spreads and smoked wild Michigan game like buffalo, elk, ostrich, venison, etc. I ended up getting turkey jerky, because the more exotic game meats were kind of pricey. I did splurge on a little piece of 11 years old cheddar cheese. This is what it was like -- and I mean this in a good way: it had a slightly salty flavor with crystallization, barnyard and cat pee odors with a fresh mushroom taste giving way to tangy marinated mushroom flavor.

Kern's Sausage 110 W. Jefferson Frankenmuth, MI 48734 is a sizeable store with a distinct Bavarian flavor. Lots of different sausages and different smoked meats are made in house. They also have imported goods from Germany. I really enjoyed their sausage stick -- I ate a whole one, intending just to have a bite. Additionally, they carry the hard to find, but delectable teewurst.
