Christmastime home-style German fare at Frankenmuth, MI's Bavarian Inn

Imagine a whole town -- post office included -- all gussied up for the holidays. Frankenmuth, Michigan honors its Bavarian heritage and really shines during Christmastime. The Zehnder family, owners of the Bavarian Inn, emigrated from Germany in 1846 and opened a restaurant in 1856. 100 years later during a trip to the Fatherland, the family decided to redecorate one of their restaurants in the traditional Bavarian style.

There's a beer stand while you wait, so that's pretty festive!

They're known far and wide for their golden chicken -- this is what they say about it:

"Natural chicken, lightly breaded, flavored with our own blend of seasonings, then quickly fried in canola oil for full flavor." It really is juicy and flavorful. The best way to experience it, so that you don't miss out on any other specialty, is the Ultimate Family Style Bavarian Dinner. It's like a buffet you don't even have to get up for! They bring all you want to the table. Their noodles and breads are Michigan products.

The Ultimate Dinner includes:

Noodle Soup and Crackers

Bread are made fresh in their bakery. Fruit and Nut Bread (Stollen). The stollen is addictive!

Homemade White Bread (Backofenbrot) and Bavarian Inn Fruit Preserves

Cole Slaw, Cranberry Relish. I love their tart cranberry relish with orange zest.

Plus Two Housemade Salads These include a tasty chicken/pasta salad that's like Salad Olivier.

Baked Dressing

Hot Vegetable du Jour

Mashed Potatoes and Gravy The gravy is slowly cooked in-house.

Bavarian Inn Buttered Noodles

Frankenmuth® Chicken

Smoked Pork Loin (Kasseler Rippchen) This is like a smoked pork chop.

Marinated Roast Beef (Sauerbraten)

Bratwurst (Smoked Sausage)

Schnitzel (Breaded Loin of Pork)

Homemade Ice Cream and Cookies. I tried the peppermint, which is creamy and brisk at the same time.

You can take home leftovers from your first plate, which I did! Their house-made root beer has a good recipe, with a medium amount of carbonation. The restaurant has all kinds of special events, including Liberace Matinee dinner shows!

Downstairs is a whole network of gift, wine and bakery shops.
