Christmas was never really About Christ?

Every Christmas I hear, "We need to put Christ back into Christ(mas)."  Quite noble.

And in an effort to salvage our Christ(mas), our churches put on some celebration to keep Christ in Christ(mas).

Let's be honest here: Is Christ(mas) really about Christ or US?

For example:

December 25 eventually became the officially recognized date for Christmas because it coincided with the pagan festivals celebrating Saturnalia and the winter solstice.  The church thereby offered the people a Christian alternative to the pagan festivities and eventually reinterpreted many of their symbols and actions in ways acceptable to Christian faith and practice.  For example, Jesus Christ was presented as the Sun of Righteousness (Mal. 4:2), replacing the sun god, Sol Invictus.  (Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, p. 238, emphasis added)

And ever since the church has been trying to keep its creation intact: "Let's put Christ back into Christmas!"  "Let's remember the reason for the season!"

Quite noble.
