Christmas Tree Lighting - Santa House and German Market at Daley Plaza

The 97th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, November 24, 2010 according to a September 21, 2010 press release from the Mayor's Office of Special Events. The City of Chicago and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) are proud to present the official start of the holiday season at Daley Plaza in dontown Chicago. 

The 97th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Wednesday, November 24, 2010! The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is a highly-anticipated event drawing people of all ages to the heart of Chicago’s downtown “Loop.” Musical performances and festive holiday music begin at 4:30 p.m. and the holiday season officially commences at 5:00 p.m., when the switch is flipped and the lights begin to dazzle in Daley Plaza. After the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony Santa House and the German Christkindl officially begin.

Santa’s House on Daley Plaza will welcome children to enjoy the magic of the spirit of giving.  Families can experience the wonder of the North Pole and have their picture taken with Santa Claus throughout the holiday season. UL's Santa's Workshop will open in coordination with the City of Chicago Annual Tree Lighting and offer activities and important safety tips to enjoy while children wait to tell Santa their holiday wishes.

 Santa House will allow kids to tour Santa’s workshop and meet Santa! Visits with Santa Claus start on Wednesday, November 24 at 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Santa House and Santa's workshop will be open for special hours  on Thanksgiving Day from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Santa’s regular visiting hours and house tours will begin on Friday, November 26 and continue every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through December 19 from 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Special Christmas week hours, December 20-24, the house will be open from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Santa will be available for photos so don’t forget your personal cameras or Underwriters Laboratories will be offering free photos as well.

The 15th Annual Christkindlmarkt offers a traditional German Christmas market in the heart of Chicago. The Christkindlmarket in Chicago is  inspired by the famous Nuremberg Christmas market dating back to 1545. Presented by the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest, this festive outdoor market offers exquisite handmade gifts, unique ornaments, rare European fabrics and textiles and the opportunity to devour German delicacies like brats, goulash, potato pancakes, cookies and Gluhwein (a warm spiced wine).
