As another Christmas holiday celebration ends, most Metro Vancouver cities offer environmentally-friendly tree recycling by curbside collection or by fundraising events hosted by community groups.
Real Christmas trees are compostable and biodegradable. The trunks and branches can be chipped and used as mulch for parks and gardens. The mulch can provide a protective barrier for the roots of plants and vegetation and prevent weeds from growing. Decomposing mulch can also release valuable nutrients into the soil for other plants. Tinsel or other decorations should be removed from the disposed trees.
In the Metro Vancouver community of Delta, there are three options for residents wishing to dispose of Christmas trees:
1. Tree Chipping
Christmas tree chipping is offered every year in early January by volunteers from the Lions Clubs in Delta. Donations are accepted and proceeds are used within the community.
The 2013 tree chipping events began today on Saturday, January 5 and will continue on Sunday, January 6.

2. Curbside Collection
Christmas trees may be put out at the curb on your yard trimmings and Green Can collection day. Large trees should be cut in half so they are easier for collection crews to handle.
3. Tree drop-off
Christmas trees can be taken to Enviro-smart Organics composting facility in Ladner for composting at no charge (4295 72 Street). You must be a Delta Resident. Contact the facility directly at 604-946-0201 for hours of operation. The City of Vancouver Landfill also accepts Christmas trees at their composting facility. The Landfill is located at 5400 72 Street in Delta. Please visit their website for hours of operation and disposal rates.
Most municipalities offer curbside collection and request that you put your tree out on the same day as your yard trimmings. However, each municipality or tree-recycling event may have specific instructions to follow.
