Christmas joy brought to disaster victims in Japan

In Iwate Prefecture, residents of temporary housing received a special treat on Christmas Eve in the form of an amateur music performance. The performance included traditional Western Christmas songs, such as “White Christmas” and “Joy to the World” as well as Japanese-versions of popular classic Christmas songs.

The concert was enjoyed by young and old alike, with some elderly residents saying it was nice considering they often do not have the chance to go out since moving into temporary housing after the massive earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

Throughout Iwate Prefecture, 100 volunteers have arranged a special Christmas treat for all the children living in temporary housing and affected by the events earlier in the year. For three days the volunteers are handing out Christmas presents, spreading smiles and Christmas joy to the children with some volunteers dressed up as Santa Claus.
