Christmas is a time to make a wish list

See also

“Christmas” lists can be made all year-round when it comes to school needs. At this time of year it is common for parents to tell their kids to write a list for Santa. Holidays should not be the only time to write lists. Often it is heard from parents the following statement: “If I could get the school to do this…”. If they were given a chance to write a wish list of their own it, without a doubt, could be long. Most of their list is, in fact, doable and can often be a miscommunicated between all parties involved.

The IEP stands for Individualized Education Program and that means that it is a plan for the STUDENT? So why not have the student make a list of his or her own? Use the holiday to take the time for the student to make such a list. There are some ground rules you should set before the list making begins.

• Use the time during the break so they do not have the daily pressures of school.
• Tell them to think of ANYTHING that can help them LEARN in school. (Focusing on the learn part of this point will get them to put more realistic things on their list).
• Discuss with your child why he or she would like to have those things.

If the things on the list can wait if the IEP is due soon, share this with the teacher who “holds” the IEP in the school. If, however, the IEP renew date is too far away, call an IEP and ask if the needs on your child’s list can be incorporated into the specially designed instruction.
