Phoenix resident Maria Maldonado came to the United States three years ago. She was working at a restaurant and got fired after an immigration raid. "I am sick of people telling me that I am illegal," she states. Arizona was a part of Mexico long before White people stole it." Ms. Maldonano, a single mother, has been forced to move herself and her three children into a homeless shelter. "They treat us like crap here. We get cheap government food and are often cold."
Erin Cavallo, an undocument student in the Maricopa Community College District, lives in a storage area just outside of Phoenix. "I live in a box. It's uncomfortable, but I have to do what I need to in order to survive." Ms. Cavallo plans to finish her school work and wants to become a nurse, but is being prevented from doing so because of her immigration status.
2010 was supposed to be the year of immigration reform. "There has been a lot of screaming, but nothing has happened," says David Valdez of Take Back Aztlán. "In 2011, we will protest and do what it takes to stand for our migrant workers." Mr. Valdez admits that with the Repubicans taking over Congress, positive steps towards immigration reform will be difficult.

In case your interview subjects haven't noticed, the economy is in a major recession. Almost 20% of Americans are unemployed or underemployed. Almost all of the rest have taken serious pay cuts (15%-25% cuts are not uncommon) just to keep the jobs they had before the collapse. We do not need illegal alien labor filling what few jobs are out there. We do not need illegal alien students taking up space in our colleges.
It doesn't matter where the illegal aliens come from, what their skin color is, or what language they speak. What matters is the damage they do once they're here.

This business about us needing illegals to clean our houses, mow our lawns and pick our fruit is so tired. I personally hire white people to clean and do yardwork, as they give much cheaper bids than Mexicans. Less than 3% of illegals now work in agriculture -have you ever noticed that most stickers on fruit show foreign origins? Illegals work in building construction and other well-paying jobs. And why did the DREAM act require two years of college if housecleaning and yardwork is all they aspire to? I'd also like to know why only 2 years in the military was suggested when four years is a requirement for legal citizens.
And to digress a bit about the DREAM act -there's no guarantee that the "dreamers" would even be qualified to enter, since the military is disqualifying more people now than ever before due to low test scores, and Hispanics score particularly low on standardized tests.
