Christmas Gift Baskets part 13: For the Chef

Portland is home to two of the most renowned culinary schools in the country. There are close to one million restaurants in Portland, not to mention everyone has to cook at home to sustain them. If you know a chef or even someone that may be starting out on their own and know nothing about the kitchen, a chef's gift basket is the perfect idea this Christmas season. Here are some ideas to help you get started.

  • The Basket- Thebasket does not have to be an actual basket by any means. Perhaps your chef has wanted a new cast iron pan or a special pot. Use this as the container to hold everything else.
  • Food-If you choose to include food in this gift basket, make sure that it is something that they will get plenty of use from. Perhaps an exotic herb or spice, a favorite soup stock or extract flavor would be better than a cut of smoked salmon or a cut of meat.
  • Accessories-Several items are greatly appreciated by a chef that will be used repeatedly. A knife sharpener, thermometer, timer, measuring spoons, and other small kitchen gadgets are always helpful to a chef; there can never be too many.
  • Safety-Safety is always a priority in the kitchen. Gloves, aprons, hats, scarves, potholders, and oven mitts are all safety items that most every chef is required to wear. These are always nice gifts as they can become easily stained and need replacing.
  • Utensils-Utensils are important in the cooking process. Including whisks, spatulas and all types of spoons in various colors or new designs are another way to perk up a gift basket. Some of these utensils even come in various designs or shapes depending on the holiday and where you purchased it.
