Chicagoans can celebrate Christmas in July when Happy Christmas opens this weekend. Shot by local filmmaker Joe Swanberg in the city’s Lincoln Square area, the movie stars Anna Kendrick, Melanie Lynskey, and Lena Dunham. On July 25, the Chicago Reader and Revolution Brewing will co-present a special opening night event at Music Box Theatre. In between the 7 p.m. screening, there will be beer samples at 6 p.m. and a live Q&A with Swanberg after the film. Tickets are $10 for all screenings of this film which runs through August 31.
In keeping with the winter theme, Music Box will show the sci-fi adventure Snowpiercer starring Chris Evans and Octavia Spencer throughout the week. Tickets are $10. Plus, Meet Me In St. Louis which features Judy Garland singing “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” is this weekend's matinee movie. Tickets are $8.
Also at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, National Theatre Live returns with an encore broadcast of Mark Haddon’s black comedy The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time directed by Marianne Elliott. Tickets are $18 at http://www.musicboxtheatre.com/collections/nt-live-2014.

The opening date for Roman Polanski’s Venus in Fur starring Emmanuelle Seigner and Mathieu Amalric has changed from July 25 as initially reported and will now open on Friday, August 15. Tickets are $10.
