Christmas 2011 weekend music happenings in Houston

Though many people are on break or vacation from work during this time of the year, that cannot be said of the artists that entertain us. While the 9 to 5ers are overeating and looking for entertainment, musicians are pumping out their creative chutzpah for the masses. And since Christmas day falls on a Sunday, the preceding days promise a plethora of music for the revelers. Here are some recommendations for the weekend:

Thursday, Dec. 22

Trae the Truth and Z-Ro at The Warehouse Live, 813 St. Emmanuel, Houston, TX 77003

The two founding members of Assholes by Nature, the band that created the ground-breaking 2008 album It is what it is, will be perfomeing together onstage for the first time. An undisclosed rift drove a wedge between the two so it should be interesting to see how the tension drives the show.

Scooter Brown at the Big Texas Dancehall and Saloon, 19959 Holzwarth, Spring, TX 77388

Montgomery's premiere alt-country band brings their rocking, twangy sound to Spring. Though they are primarily tagged as a country band, the foundation of rock should make it more than bearable for even the most avid country music hater.

Friday, Dec. 23

Los Skarnales, Los Gritos, The Suffers, Mariachis Del Infierno at Fizgerald's, 2706 White Oak, Houston, TX 77007

Nine man, 17 year veterans of the ska scene, Los Skarnales bring their high energy show to the Heights Friday night. Having been around so long, the band has had more than a few personnel changes, but the other bands playing include former memebers of Los Skarnales, so not only should it be a pogo-fest, it will be a reunion of sorts.

Saturday, Dec. 24

Lil' Flip & Friends at The Warehouse Live, 813 St. Emmanuel, Houston, TX 77003

Lil' Flip represents the Houston rap scene from a time before it went mainstream in 2005. He has worked with Beyonce, Game and Nelly, and though he is considered a local legend, his name is not exactly what one would call household. Maybe this Christmas Eve, Santa will bring him the recognition he deserves.

Sunday, Dec. 25

Elysian at Scout Bar Clear Lake, 18307 Egret Bay Blvd., Houston, TX 77058

After the gifts have been opened and the belly over-stuffed, why not work off some of that lethargy with some good old-fashioned heavy metal? But this isn't your run of the mill metal; vocalist Thomas Sustaita has a voice so versatile you would think there are three of him.

So go out, raise a glass and give these bands the only gift they really want: an audience.
