Christina Green, 9-year-old girl killed in Arizona shooting, was 9/11 baby
Christina Green, the 9-year-old girl who was killed Saturday during a Tucson, Arizona shooting, was born on September 11, 2001, and was proud of it.
She was involved in student government, thus her mother felt seeing Rep. Gabrielle Giffords hold a ‘Congress On Your Corner’ event would be something Christina would enjoy.
“I allowed her to go, thinking it would be an innocent thing,” said Roxanne Green, 45, Christina’s mother.
Instead, a gunman shot Giffords point blank in the head and killed six others during the shooting -- including little Christina.
Her mother said although 9/11 was a terrible day, her daughter’s birth brought joy “and lent a grace note of hope,” reports the New York Times.
In fact, Christina was one of the 50 “Faces of Hope” representing babies from 50 states who were born on 9/11.
“From the very beginning, she was an amazing child… She was very bright, very mature, off the charts. She was the brightest thing that happened that day,” said her mother.
John Green, Christina’s father is a supervising scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, while her grandfather, Dallas Green, at one time managed the Philadelphia Phillies, the New York Yankees and the Mets.
According to her family, Christina was a straight ‘A’ student, was interested in politics, a good athlete, a member of the choir at St. Odilia Roman Catholic Church, and loved her pets. She also had big dreams, wanting one day to attend a university in the east and become a veterinarian.
“She was cute as a button,” said her mother. “I could never imagine this was going to happen.”
Jared Loughner is the suspected shooter and has been charged with murder.
Rep. Gifford is expected to make a full recovery from her injuries.
