Christina Aguilera may open up to David Letterman after the Grammys

According to the entertainment rumor mill this weekend, Late Show host David Letterman may secure the first interview with Christina Aguilera after last weekend's much-publicized Super Bowl debacle, where Aguilera infamously botched the national anthem before a worldwide audience of 100 million.

Tonight, Aguilera will return to national television for the 2011 Grammy Awards, where she will take part in the Aretha Franklin tribute along with Jennifer Hudson, Florence Welch, Yolanda Adams and Martina McBride.

David Letterman, who reportedly enjoys a closer relationship with Aguilera than Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien and others in the late night line up, has allegedly reached out to Aguilera and may land the booking this week, according to sources who shared the tidbit with mainstream media this weekend.

Letterman's show of support for Christina Aguilera with a "friendly interview" would represent one of the few gracious opportunities Aguilera has received during the past week. On Monday, fellow Super Bowl performer Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas came to Christina Aguilera's defense, following what many fans are describing as the most embarrassing moment of Aguilera's career. Hours after her controversial performance, Aguilera apologized to the world saying “I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”

Among the few actually expressing sympathy for Christina Aguilera is Fergie, who publicly commented Monday about Aguilera's flub.

"You know what? It's such a huge venue, your nerves take a hold of you," Fergie said during an interview on Dan Patrick's radio show. "I completely understand. She's one of the best singers of our time. Nobody can take that away from you. ... But you get nervous at these things. We're human."

Fergie's comments differ dramatically from those of comedian Joan Rivers. “How stupid can you get?” Rivers told PopEater on Monday. “Christina must have been thinking about food, that’s why she forgot the words.”

Will Christina Aguilera ever live down the embarrassment of mangling the national anthem on Super Bowl Sunday? And would an appearance on David Letterman really make the situation better?

Lol. Is the fact that she messed up a couple of words even that big a deal? It was kinda of a good water cooler moment the day after it happened, but is far from being some Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction type embarrassment. She's an amazing singer. People need to get over it already. I'd be interested to see her take on it with Letterman though.

Christina is fine. She actually has the support of several people. There are a few who aren't supporting her though. Among the many people supporting Christina are: Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Miley Cyrus, Nicole Scherzinger, Jordin Sparks, Reggie Bush, Kim Kardashian and many more musicians. Christina is highly respected and while this may have put a damper on her career, she still has the support from her peers and veterans in the music game.
