Christie denies Hoboken mayor's accusations of wrongdoing

Governor Chris Christie (R,NJ) has denied allegations that he deliberately withheld Sandy hurricane relief funds to the tune of $100 million from the City of Hoboken, New Jersey contingent on support for a multi-million dollar real estate deal by Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer, according to ABC News, Jan. 20, 2014. So far Hoboken only has seen about $340,000 of the requested $100 million. Zimmer has alleged that the Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey, Kim Guadagno, came to Hoboken and met her in a parking lot and told her that although it was a highly unusual practice, that the expectation was that she would support the real estate project promoted by The Rockefeller Group if she was to see any of the funds for the Sandy relief effort.

Zimmer claims that Christie administration officials also told her not to expect any Sandy relief funds unless she approved the proposed multi-million dollar real estate deal in question. Christie administration officials deny Zimmer's allegations, citing the fact that although she is a Democrat, that she expressed her support of Christie in the past, stating that she was glad that "he's been our Governor." However, in an interview with radio station WNYC yesterday, Zimmer highlighted the fact that Christie was disappointed over the fact that she had not endorsed him for re-election as Governor.

Zimmer questioned whether or not Christie's withholding of the additional needed funds was retribution for her failure to support his re-election efforts:

"With 20/20 hindsight, in the context we're in right now, we can always look back and say, 'OK, was it retribution? I really hope that's not the case."

Governor Christie is to be sworn in for his second term as Governor tomorrow. Fewer people are expected at this inaugural ceremony than at his first one four years ago.
