According to a December 25 article in AP News; Pope Francis, in his Christmas address, spoke on 5 critical issues that were on his “Christmas” wish list. The list included: protection for Christians under attack, battered women, children involved in trafficking rings, peace in the Middle East and Africa, and dignity for refugees. The
Pope’s address was received by some 70,000 onlookers.
The article goes on to say that the Pope offered prayers for all those that are persecuted.
The Pope’s address comes at a time when the persecution of Christians is on the rise.
According to the website Breibart, over 85 worshippers were killed in a Christian church in September by suicide bombers.
Worldvision.org estimates that 115 million children are the victims of labor and sexual exploitation. NCADV (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence) estimates that 1 in 4 women will be a victim of domestic violence, and that 1.3 million women will be the victim of abuse by an intimate partner every year.
The majority of Christians polled for this for this article felt that the most concerning issue mentioned by the Pope is the persecution of Christians.
Said one Christian:
“The Holy Bible offers blessings on and for those persecuted for Christ. We need these missionaries to educate others and stop the spread of abuse; of trafficking; of unrest. While each issue mentioned by the Pope can be truly called the most tragic; we need to focus on Christian persecution because the only cure to the other issues mentioned is the advancement of the gospel."
