Christians avoiding worldly distractions during their Advent journey

See also

As Christians are continuing their journey through the Advent season there are some things they like, such as listening to the Christmas carols proclaiming the coming of Jesus Christ to earth that are played in some stores and shopping centers. Christians also enjoy listening to radio programs and watching television programs which have the music and the message about the true meaning of Christmas in them.

However, Christians don’t like having to avoid the many things that try to distract their attention away from the coming of Jesus to earth as the true meaning of Christmas. The biggest of these distractions is hearing about and seeing the largely mythical figure of Santa Claus nearly everywhere they go.

Santa is a major distraction because sometimes it seems that he wants to replace God as the person who children should want to please so they can get some presents at Christmas. Since many children believe that Santa is able to see everything they do during the year and will reward them at Christmas with a lot of presents if they have been good children; then Santa has replaced God and their parents as the source of good gifts.

Another problem with Santa Claus is that when parents encourage their children to believe in Santa and the children later find out that he is largely a mythical figure, then the children may wonder if other things that their parents have taught them are also a myth.

This could be a big problem for Christian parents who taught their children to believe and follow what God says in the Bible. Although the problem of the children wondering if what their parents taught them was a myth can be overcome with a lot of explanations about the reality of believing in God and living according to God’s principles found in the Bible, it would be better for Christian parents to leave Santa Claus out of their Christmas celebrations.

In addition to the distraction of Santa Claus, there are many cute, yet fictional characters that are seen in television programs and movies that try to distract people’s attention away from what really happened on the original Christmas Day.

A further distraction from enjoying the true meaning of Christmas is the great pressure for people to use a lot of money and credit to buy all their family and friends the right present for them.

While the tradition of showing love to your family and friends by giving them Christmas presents is a wonderful and meaningful tradition for people to have, yet at the same time we should remember that it is Jesus’ birthday as a man that we are celebrating. Thus, we should find ways to give a special birthday present to Jesus along with giving Christmas presents to our family and friends.

We can give a special birthday present to Jesus by giving some of our financial, talent, or time resources to help Christian ministries in many ways. We can also give presents to honor Jesus by giving food, rent, or heating assistance to the struggling poor people in our community. We also need to tell them that just as Jesus met our need to be able to have a close relationship with God through His sacrificial atonement on the cross; we can show our appreciation for the love Jesus showed us by helping poor people with some of their basic needs of food, rent, or heating assistance along with some warm blankets or clothing. (Matthew 25:34-40, 1 John 3:16-18)

Christmas should be a great time for Christians to celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ to earth to be born as a baby and begin the completion of God’s plan for the spiritual redemption of mankind. Christians can listen to great Christian Christmas music, watch great Christian Christmas programs and movies, and attend wonderful Christian Christmas services as part of their journey through the Advent season.

Then, on Christmas Day Christians can celebrate the true meaning of Christmas as they proclaim: “Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King!”
