It's not every day that a professional athlete comes to town. Or at least one who's in the endurance sports circle. And if you're into cycling and road racing, you'll want to quit work early tonight and revel among the last-minute shoppers on Michigan Avenue to make your way to the Garmin Store, 663 N. Michigan Ave., where you'll have the chance to meet Christian Vande Velde.
Vande Velde, a professional cyclist who's had quite the impressive season, will be answering questions and signing autographs from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on December 22. He races for Team Garmin and is no stranger to the Windy City. He grew up in the nearby Lemont area and rumor has it that his parents are still in the area.
Need some tips for speed in the new year? Or how to manage a multi-stage, multi-day race? Or how to get better on the bike? Ask this guy. Vande Velde finishes 2011 with two impressive finishes under his belt: 4th overall at the Tour of California and 2nd overall at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. He's also finished in the top eight at the Tour de France, not once but twice, and was also a team time trial stage winner at the Tour de France.
Plus, it's always a chance to do some shopping. Surely there's someone on your list who could use a Garmin tool for the road, the run or the ride (I know there's one on my wish list).
