State Rep. Christian Mitchell (D-26) has won re-election last night, winning another tough, hard-fought race against Jay Travis by a handful of votes. It was just two years ago in 2012 that Mitchell won a narrow victory of 500 votes over his opponent, Kenny Johnson, in the race for the Illinois 26th district house seat.

Mitchell defeated Travis by a similar margin. The victory was impressive, however, since Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis, who resides in Mitchell’s district, actively opposed Mitchell. Chicago Teachers Union PAC also donated to Travis.

Travis was also supported and received thousands of dollars in donations from AFSCME Illinois Council No. 31 PAC, Illinois Federation of Teacher's COPE, S.E.I.U. Local 73, West Suburban Teachers Union, Local 571 COPE/PAC Fund, American Federation of Teachers Local 604 COPE II, among many others.

Mitchell ran in 2012 with a pledge to fight for safer street, a responsible budget, and greater educational opportunities. Mitchell said at the time. "It is my goal to work with all groups and bring together all the stakeholders together in the community."

Mitchell was to have been made an example by CTU President Karen Lewis, but proved to be a much more formidable opponent and there is no question that Mitchell has strengthened himself politically.

Mitchell also had his share of heavyweight support, with his biggest booster being Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. His other supporters included Ald. Will Burns (4th Ward), state Senator Kwame Raoul (D-16) and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin.

Mitchell political future is unlimited, as he may eventually shoot for higher office including United States Congress.
