Chris Rainey arrested, fired from Pittsburgh Steelers after assault charge

Chris Rainey was arrested Thursday morning in Gainesville, Fla. for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. Hours later, he was fired from the Pittsburgh Steelers, TMZ reports Jan. 10.

Witnesses who called 911 claim they saw NFL running back slap his girlfriend after an argument over a cell phone. She apparently tried locking herself in her roommate's car, but Rainey caught up with her and dragged her out of the passenger seat. They both fell and he slapped her in the face. His girlfriend started running again with Rainey going after her to get her purse the phone was in. They both fell down once more.

Police say no visible injuries happened as a result of the dispute.

Rainey is in custody and being charged with one count of simple battery, which is a misdemeanor.

In an updated report after Chris Rainey's arrest, the Pittsburgh Steelers fired him for the incident.

Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert, said this in a statement to TMZ:

"Chris Rainey’s actions this morning were extremely disappointing. Under the circumstances and due to this conduct, Chris will no longer be a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers."
