Chris Pratt attached as star of Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

Chris Pratt is about to go off into outer space, as the Parks & Recreation star won the lead role in Marvel's upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, according to Deadline.

Pratt will play Star-Lord, the offspring of a human mother and an alien father who grows up to become the leader of a futuristic team of superheroes who defends the galaxy from the forces of evil.

Besides Parks & Recreation, Pratt appeared on the big screen with Moneyball and director Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty. He was also a regular on the family drama Everwood, which also co-starred Revenge vixen Emily VanCamp, who played his onscreen sibling and will also be Chris Rogers' love interest in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The Guardians of the Galaxy has been known to fight alongside The Avengers, who might be of major help in setting this up as a potential franchise, with the possibility of Iron Man himself Robert Downey, Jr. appearing in the film. Downey even helped launched The Avengers Institute five years ago with the first Iron Man, which led to assembling "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" last summer; a sequel is already in the works for a 2015 release.

The Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled to be released on August 1, 2014.
