Chris Mierzwiak falls short in Bellator debut

Chris Mierzwiak’s Bellator debut did not go as planned.

The Cincinnati native lost by unanimous decision to Johnny Buck at Bellator 89. The judges scored the fight 29-28 (x3).

The welterweight fight took place on Thursday night at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C. The fight aired live on Spike.com.

In the opening round, Buck was able to score an early takedown but Mierzwiak was able to sweep and roll for a kneebar. After switching back-and-forth between a kneebar and a heel hook, the Strikeforce veteran was able to take Buck’s back and control him for the remainder of the first round.

In the second and third rounds, Buck was able to score a takedown in each round and control Mierzwiak on the ground. Buck was never able to do any damage on the ground but did enough to earn the rounds on the judges score cards.

With the win, Buck improves his record to 12-8 and now has a five-fight winning streak.

With the loss, Mierzwiak drops to 4-3 and has now alternated wins and losses in his last five fights.
