R&B singer Chris Brown is not someone who comes to mind when it comes to public support of gay rights, but Brown recently tweeted showing his support and encouraging his followers and fans to get behind an effort to improve conditions in Cameroon for the LGBT community. As E! Online reports on October 2, Brown tweeted a link to an AllOut.org petition along with the following message:
“Love is not a crime. Gay or straight. Love who u wanna love. Stop the hate & sign here.”
This recent show of support from Brown shows a sign of maturity from the singer who recently had a beef with R&B singer Frank Ocean who came out as bisexual. Brown aimed a homophobic slur at Ocean, which further tarnished his image and public perception, but Brown continued to claim he was just misunderstood.
In all fairness, this isn’t the first time Brown as shown support for gay rights. Earlier this year he released a single titled “Don’t Think They Know”. The single was apart of his UNITY CAMPAIGN that encourages people of all races, genders and sexual orientation to love each other.
The petition also encourages love as it is asking Cameroon’s President Paul Biya and other politicians in the country to accept United Nations recommendations to protect the LGBT community from anti-gay violence throughout the region. Part of those recommendations includes ending the law in the country that currently criminalizes homosexuality.
