Chris Brown may have a great deal of fans, but he equally has a large following of non-fans. Ever since he brutally abused girlfriend Rihanna, and put her in the hospital back in 2009, their relationship has been one of pop culture’s biggest focuses. On Monday, April 1, the 23-year-old singer made an appearance on ‘The Today Show’ to discuss his upcoming album, and his relationship with Rihanna, whom he recently reunited with.
After talking music, it was time to discuss his rough past with Rihanna. His ‘Today Show’ speech has brought an undeniable outpour of mixed thoughts from commentators.
“I’ve been humbled by the whole experience,” Chris said. “From me losing everything, you know, to me having to regain public opinion or whatever it is — but most importantly, you know, knowing that what I did was totally wrong and having to kind of deal with myself and kind of forgive myself in the same breath and being able to apologize to, you know, Rihanna and be that man that can be who is a man, you know?”
He was also questioned about the status of his current relationship with Rihanna, as rumors have been suggesting that the pair has split yet again. Chris denied the allegations, and said they are together, and doing good.
“I think it’s just me proving myself once again,” Chris added. “Knowing that what I did was wrong, and never doing it again. So as far as me and (Rihanna) are concerned, she knows my heart, and I know her heart. So I’m not really focused on the negative.”
“For me, it’s about proving myself to my fans,” he said about releasing his album X in August. “The only thing I can do is please my family, myself, and please her, you know, and my fans.”
Most people simply aren’t buying his claims. “The once an abuser, always an abuser” saying is certainly being utilized today. Critics have also said that Rihanna is a poor role model for women, because she isn’t respecting herself by going back to the man who almost beat her to death. It has also been pointed out as interesting irony that Brown would be trying to gain approval right before his new album release. Nonetheless, Chris and Rihanna say that their relationship has changed for the better, and that he doesn't need everyone to like him.
What do you think? Is he serious about being a new man, or are you calling bluff?
