Last night's episode of "Chopped" offered four more chefs an opportunity to compete for the $10,000 and the very elusive title of a champion. Faced with mystery baskets of strange ingredients, they must create something that will appeal to the judges and also show off their culinary skills and creativity in the appetizer, entree and dessert rounds.
The judges for this episode are: Marc Murphy, Maneet Chauhan and Geoffrey Zakarian. The host, as always is Ted Allen.
Competing in this episode, and paying homage to the “Great Food Truck Race” are: Hop Phan, owner of the Dos Chinos food truck in Orange County, Calif., Tagan Couch, owner and chef of The Gypsy Kit trailer in Austin, Texas, Chris Trapani, owner and chef of the food truck Urban Cowboy, also in Austin, and Michael Israel, owner and chef of the Moe Deli food truck in Los Angeles, Calif.
The first round appetizer mystery box contained: Smoked Pork Chops, Savoy Cabbage, Ginger Snap Cookies and Blood Sausage. Chris made spice-rubbed smoked pork in a lettuce wrap using oregano, cumin and paprika. Michael, a kosher chef made matzo ball soup using eggs, onions and chicken broth. Hop made wilted cabbage with sautéed pork chop and sausage using butter, orange and vegetable stock. Tagan made grilled pork chops with Savoy cabbage slaw using curry, green apple and turmeric. The chef who was eliminated was Tagan, who did not use the ginger snaps in her presentation.
The entree round contained: Halibut, Chinese Celery, Pepperoni Risotto and Orange Flavored Drink. Michael made pan-seared halibut with risotto using garlic, onions and vegetable stock. Hop made grilled halibut with celery risotto using onions, shallots and garlic. Chris made pepperoni risotto with pan-seared halibut using capers, shallots, and Dijon mustard. The chef who was "Chopped" in this round was Chris because his fish was undercooked, and the risotto was too sweet.
The dessert round included: Guanabana Nectar, White Chocolate Chips, Pecans and Chipotle in Adobo. Hop made guanabana sorbet with white chocolate chipotle sauce using lemon, eggs, and corn syrup. Michael made chocolate pecan kugel with brittle using eggs, salt and cream cheese.
The winner of the $10,000 and "Chopped" champion was Michael, who won the $1,000 and bragging rights for his great culinary skills.
