Last night's second-chance episode of "Chopped" offered four eliminated chefs an opportunity to compete for the $10,000 and the very elusive, as they well know, title of a champion.
The judges for this episode are: Aaron Sanchez, Alex Guarnaschelli and Marc Murphy. The host, as always is Ted Allen.
Competing again in this episode are: Jeff Eng, with his crazy Mohawk who appeared on the episode “Leftovers Extravaganza!" Zoe Feigenbaum appeared on the episode “A Bunny Thing Happened” and was eliminated in the last round. Kent Rollins who made it to the “Grill Masters: Finale” only to be eliminated in the dessert round, and Frank Whittaker who appeared on the episode "Ready, Set, Escargot!" was also eliminated in the last round.
The first round appetizer mystery box contained: Vegan Lobster, Hot Mustard, Canned Chop Suey and Winter Melon. Kent made chop suey salad with butter and garlic vegan lobster using Napa cabbage, apple and butter. Frank made vegan lobster and winter melon stir-fry using onion, garlic and peppers. Zoe made fried spring rolls using ginger, chiles and mirin. Jeff made winter melon soup using soy sauce, sriracha and coconut milk. The chef who was eliminated was Frank, who used the polenta under the chop suey, and it absorbed all the canned flavor.
The entree round contained: Skordalia, Hawaiian Parrot Fish, Pickled Sour Grapes and Chayote Squash. Jeff made cumin-crusted parrot fish with chayote slaw using carrots, cream and cumin. Zoe made poached parrot fish with tzatziki sauce using yogurt, capers and dill. Kent made breaded parrot fish with Skordalia tartar sauce using bread crumbs, asparagus and paprika. The chef who was "Chopped" in this round was Jeff, who used too much skordalia and also added cocoa powder which the judges did not like.
The dessert round included: Bubble Tea, Papaya, Coconut Butter and Chocolate-Covered Bananas. Zoe made baked Alaska with banana chocolate ice cream using eggs, sugar and vanilla. Kent made papaya bread pudding with a blueberry cream whiskey sauce using eggs, sour cream and heavy cream.
