Milk is an essential food source for healthy bones, nutrition and calcium that we all need to support a healthy lifestyle. Choosing the proper container when purchasing milk is just as important as choosing the type of milk your body needs or can tolerate.
Various cartons are make of glass, clear plastic, opaque plastic or cardboard. When purchasing milk the best containers to obtain are those make of opaque or cardboard. These types of containers allows the milk to contain more micronutrients than those of clear glass or plastic.
Milk can be affected by light which breaks down the vitamin C and vitamin B2 or riboflavin contained in the milk. Light can also reduce the amount of vitamins especially vitamin A by at least twenty percent. Light drastically reduces the micronutrients contained in the milk which is needed for strong bones.
So next time you shop for milk and check for the type of milk you prefer (whole, skim, 2 percent, 1 percent) and the expiration date also look at the container to ensure you will get all you can out of that gallon without losing the nutrients you need most.
