Choosing the right coworking space

Has your small startup begun to take up more space then you have? Are you a solo entrepreneur tired of working in your pajamas and talking to your beagle all day? Then maybe it is time to join a coworking space.

Sam Rosen, co-founder of Desktime an application that helps space owners and renters find each other offers some tips and advice for those looking for coworking spaces.

“One of the most important things to take into consideration is noise,” says Rosen.

Noise and privacy can be a major concern for startups and entrepreneurs. Rosen agrees, he remembers two patrons vividly who both left on the same day one because the space was too noisy and the other because it was too quiet.

The second tip Rosen offers is “be mindful of proximity to transportation and restaurants.”

Of course in a city like D.C. that is a no-brainer, it is important that metro is nearby. Good food spots are essential for days when you want to step out of the office and grab a bite with your new comrades.

Rosen also stressed the importance of a community manager who is active and professional. “You want someone who will introduce you to others and who manages the office well and is an active participate in the community.”

“Also look out for internet speed capabilities,” he adds.

There are many people in one area so making sure that the internet is up and not slow is a real concern.

“Finding the right mix of people is always important as well to create that sense of community” says Rosen. Laurin Hodge, lab manger for Affinity Lab on U Street agrees.

“Finding the right coworking space is a lot like dating,” Hodge says. She encourages those looking for a spot to visit and get a feel for how the community is.

“You will know when you have found the right spot,” she continued.

Hodge shared the story of a filmmaker and videographer who both decided to go into business together after helping each other with various projects.

“That sense of community is what will really make the difference," says Hodge.

When you have decided a coworking space is essential to your growth keep these tips in mind.
