Choosing new disc golf discs part 2

Once you start to throw  with enough snap for the disc to fly the way it was designed to fly,  the understable discs will start to turn over on you. Don’t automatically throw them out of your bag. Having a controllable disc that turns the opposite direction of a normal throw, is a key part of a good disc golf game.

You’re not ready yet to go to the fastest newest discs. You are still in the process of working your way up to them. There are several different flight guides to use to determine the next discs for you to try. Discraft has the simplest guide, but it gives the least amount of information. Basically negative numbers are understable and the more positive numbers are more overstable.

The Twin Cities based Gotta Go Gotta Throw has a flight chart that they made called Joes flight chart, Joes flight chart focuses on how the disc will fly.

Innova has a good explanation of how their discs will perform.  Just don’t get too hung up on one manufacture. Being the most successful at disc golf is determined by finding the discs that work best for you.

I have a flight guidethat I put together that is good for comparing all manufactures discs with  the information from all of the flight charts available in one place. It is very good for comparing, but you need to understand what the numbers mean. Here is a guide showing how to use it.

The disc golf flight guide you should use when you are starting out and don’t understand exactly what all the numbers mean is the Marshal Street flight guide. This is not necessarily the most accurate but it is the easiest to follow.   When you start out, you should be using discs in the lower right part of the guide. When those discs start to turn over on you work your way up the right side and towards the middle. As you can see, the fastest newest discs are on the top left side of the guide. Stay away from there. When your beginner discs start to turn over, move up into the 5 speed discs in the C or D columns, such as an XL or XS.

These are all good tools to use to find a disc that you need to for a particular task. Stay away from the very fast overstable discs until you have the snap to throw them.  Learning to play disc golf is a process of working your way from the easiest to the hardest.

I found out about, and started playing disc golf in 1978 when the sport was in its infancy. There was only 1 good course in Minnesota at that time, Acorn Park. I played for several years, and then took a while off. The sport is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and I have gotten...
