Shorter days and a chill in the air means Halloween is just around the corner. Traditional candy or caramel apples tend to be a staple at most holiday parties. If you are looking for something a bit different, a chocolate, caramel, “sugar skull” apple may be what your party needs to kick it up to the next level of awesomeness.

Decorated with candies to represent a skull, these chocolate and caramel apples are a tribute to the Mexican holiday celebrated just after Halloween honoring the deceased known as The Day of the Dead.

Traditionally sugar skulls are used as gifts to both the living and dead, but this treat seems more aligned to the living, as the chocolate will not withstand long periods outside the refrigerator.

Candies, piped icing and fruit leather all come together to create a skull appearance on the apple and represent the traditional sugar skull. Melted chocolate and caramel make this treat a hit with kids of all ages. Easy and fun this craft is entertaining and delicious.

Ingredients List:

  • Apples
  • Wooden ice cream sticks (color with food coloring if desired)
  • Chocolate covered caramel candies
  • Milk
  • Candy decorations of choice
  • Piped icing

Follow the directions in the above video for a quick and easy Halloween treat.

Cheers!

Elizabeth
