Chocolate cake recipe: Cake balls are so easy to make

One bite of a chocolate cake ball and you are forever hooked. Luscious, moist cake covered in a rich chocolate coating – yum! This may be the perfect party food. They’re easy to eat, easy to make, and everyone loves them. Best of all, you can make them in any flavor that suits your tastes.

These little balls of cake use a cake mix and a can of frosting – how easy is that? You can combine chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, vanilla cake with lemon frosting, strawberry cake with vanilla frosting; the combinations are endless. The finishing touch is dipping them in chocolate – milk, dark or white. If you want to get really creative you can roll them in sprinkles or drizzle them with a contrasting chocolate.

Although it’s not necessary to put them on a stick, it makes dipping them and eating them so much easier. The best sticks to use are a two-pronged hors d’oeuvres stick or popsicle sticks (but dip them in the melted chocolate first so they stay on). Toothpicks don’t work well, as the balls tend to slip off while dipping.

Cake Ball Recipe

Ingredients for Cake Balls:

  • 18-ounce boxed cake mix made into a cake according to the directions on the back of the box, cooled completely
  • 16-ounce can of prepared frosting
  • 24-ounce bag of chocolate chips, melted (can also use chocolate bark or chocolate coating disks)

Directions for making Cake Balls:

Once the cake is baked according to the directions on the back of the box and completely cooled, break it into small pieces in a large mixing bowl. Put in the entire can of prepared frosting and stir together well (works best if you use your hands). You will end up with a thick dough. Form the dough into 1-inch balls or less (remember, it will become bigger after being dipped in chocolate coating). Put a stick in the middle of each ball and freeze for at least 1 hour.

Melt the chocolate chips and dip each cake ball into the chocolate to cover it completely. Place on wax paper or parchment paper until the chocolate sets (do not refrigerate – it streaks the chocolate). Enjoy!
