The basis for this brownie recipe is a German chocolate cake mix. The unique taste of German chocolate adds something so special to the overall flavor of the brownies.
The origin of this recipe is unclear, as it has been copied, rewritten, and passed from person to person over the years. A good guess would be that it was found on the back of a Pillsbury cake mix box, as it mentions the brand name – although any brand of German chocolate cake mix can be used.
Chocolate Caramel Brownies Recipe
Ingredients for Chocolate Caramel Brownies:
- 50 bite-sized caramel candies
- 2/3 cup evaporated milk (divided)
- 1 German chocolate cake mix
- ¾ cup butter, melted
- 1 cup pecans, finely chopped (optional)
- 1 cup milk chocolate chips
Directions for making Chocolate Caramel Brownies:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish.
In a saucepan, combine the caramel candies and 1/3 cup evaporated milk. Stirring constantly, cook over low heat until the caramels are melted – keep warm and set aside.
In large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix powder, the melted butter, 1/3 cup evaporated milk, and chopped pecans (if using).
Spread ½ of the dough in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Bake for 6 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove from the oven, while still warm, sprinkle the chocolate chips over the baked crust, and drizzle the caramel mixture over the chocolate. Crumble the remaining ½ of the dough over the caramel (note that it will spread a little when baking). Bake for 15 – 20 minutes. Cool before cutting into squares.
