Chloe Jonnson: Transgender athlete sues CrossFit for not allowing her to compete

A transgender woman is suing Crossfit for refusing to allow her to compete.

Chloe Jonnson is a transgender woman that is looking to compete in an upcoming set of athletic games, but due to the nature of her gender, she isn't going to be allowed to do so. TMZ reported on March 6, 2014, that Jonnson is suing CrossFit over claims that they won't allow her to compete in the women's division of the upcoming CrossFit Games.

Essentially, they won't let her compete in that division because she was born as a man.

Jonnson is listed as 5'4", 151 pounds, and has filed a $2.5 million lawsuit against CrossFit for denying her entry into the women's division of the games. In the lawsuit, Jonnson says that CrossFit has violated her civil rights as a woman.

She states that she is legally recognized by the state of California as a woman. She had sex reassignment surgery back in 2006, and the change is now said to be complete.

CrossFit wasn't so sure about that fact, and therefore they won't allow her to be a part of the women's division. A letter from CrossFit actually states that there is a rule saying since Jonnson was "born as a male, she will need to compete in the Men's Division."

CrossFit sent the letter to Chloe Jonnson and started out rather professional, but then decided to get a little more straight-forward:

"The fundamental, ineluctable fact is that a male competitor who has a sex reassignment procedure still has a genetic makeup that confers a physical and physiological advantage over women."

But in the letter, CF gets aggressive -- saying, "Our decision has nothing to do with 'ignorance' or being bigots -- it has to do with a very real understanding of the human genome, of fundamental biology, that you are either intentionally ignoring or missed in high school."

The CrossFit Games officially begin on July 25, 2014.
