On Wednesday, September 25, local author Frank Zafiro announced on his blog that "Chisolm's Debt", the novella that is the latest release in his River City crime fiction series, is now available from CreateSpace in its first paperback edition.
"Chisolm's Debt" is Zafiro's first story that features his popular recurring character Officer Thomas Chisolm in a starring role. Chisolm appears in all four of the River City novels and is mentioned in short stories such as some of the selections that appear in his anthology "Dead Even."
According to the synopsis on CreateSpace, "After two tours in Vietnam and 25 years as a police officer, Thomas Chisolm is looking forward to a quiet retirement. That hope is quickly shattered when Mai, a ghost from his past, finds him and demands justice for the horrors she suffered during the Vietnam War...horrors Chisolm couldn't save her from.
"Now Chisolm must find the man responsible and bring him to justice to repay an old debt and in the hopes of putting his own demons to rest...once and for all."
The novella is both a gripping crime fiction story and a thoughtful examination of how people deal with guilt and old regrets. As Chisolm tries to atone for what happened to Mai back in 1969, he wrestles with memories that have been troubling him at least since he first relived them in the novel "Under a Raging Moon." This eventually helps him find some redemption.
Zafiro said the covers for the paperback and ebook editions were designed by local photographer M.J. Rose. Both cover images incorporate a photograph of a colleague of Zafiro's from his days as a member of the Spokane Police Department (SPD).
According to Zafiro, "... the man on the cover is no other than retired SPD officer Thomas Chapman. Chapman was the basis for the character of Thomas Chisolm, so I thought it was only fitting to have him on the cover for what will be Chisolm’s last adventure (not the last you’ll read about, just the last one from his perspective — he’s in his 60s in Chisolm’s Debt)."
Zafiro added that he is working on an audiobook version of "Chisolm's Debt." No date has been set yet for its release.
