With four of 10 gold medals, China was the most successful country at the Ghent World Cup, which concluded Sunday in Belgium.
Former World champions Zhang Hongtao (pommel horse) and Wang Guanyin (parallel bars) easily won their specialties, while triple Olympic gold medalist Zou Kai made a successful comeback after almost a year off the international stage, winning high bar and placing second on floor with a super difficult new routine.
Zou, who made his reputation as a twister, opened on floor with a double-twisting double layout and also added a double layout dismount, according to quick hits provided courtesy of The All Around Gymnastics News.
Brazil, with gold medals on men's floor and women's vault, also had a fantastic competition. Diego Hypolito, too injured to compete at last year's World Championships, made a successful return to international competition in Ghent, opening on floor with a whip to Arabian double pike and showing off his unusual twisting capacity (1.5 to Randi; 2.5 to immediate front double full) and beautiful form.
On vault, World bronze medalist Jade Barbosa won the title over Israel's Valeriia Maksiuta and fellow countrywoman Adrian Gomez.
Tiny Wu Liufang, the Chinese women's alternate for the 2010 World Championships, flip flopped her way to the title on beam (roundoff, layout to two feet, switch ring, front aerial, bhs, layout, side somie, double pike) after first-day leader Viktoria Komova came off on her layout series.
It was a great meet for Wu, who also earned silver on floor (front double full, 1.5 to front pike, double pike) and bronze on uneven bars, behind Komova and teammate Jiang Yuyuan.
The question for the Chinese now will be whether they opt to take one-event gymansts like Wang and Zhang to Tokyo as they look to defend their World team title. Both are obviously capable of challenging for World titles on their best events but are unlikely to the team score on the other five.
Ukraine's Mariya Livchikova, a first-year senior, maintained her lead on floor exercise from preliminaries to win her first major international title, ahead of Wu and former World floor champion Daiane dos Santos. Livchikova also earned silver on women's balance beam.
Ukraine's Igor Radivilov (vault) and Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece (still rings) also maintained their leads from the preliminary round to gold in event finals.
