Chinese authorities are hunting for an unidentified woman responsible for drugging a six-year old boy in the northern province of Shanxi and gouging out his eyes. At first, they suspected he might have been the victim of an organ trafficker, but police later reported finding his eyeballs, complete with corneas yesterday.
The child (surnamed Gui) was found covered in blood, and was taken to a nearby eye hospital in Fenxi County. He is still unaware that he is blind, and "Asks why the sky is always dark... and why the dawn still hasn't come," according to his uncle.
"We could only tell him that his eyes had some injury and have to be bandaged. We tell him that they will be fine after the bandage is removed. It is such a difficult question to explain to him. It is the most heartbreaking thing," he added.
The boy will eventually have artificial eyes implanted into his sockets once the inflammation subsides, “so people will not be so afraid to look at him in the future.”.
The brutal attack has shocked Internet users throughout China, who offered sympathy for the boy and demanded retribution against his attacker on the country's hugely popular microblogs.
In addition, the police are offering a 100,000 yuan ($16,000) reward for information leading to the arrest of the sole suspect.
