Shanghai prosecutors have brought a human trafficking charge against a couple in China after finding they put their infant daughter up for adoption online and accepted money for the baby, according to Justice News Flash . The parents are unemployed and have two other children. Investigators determined that the couple posted the information while the mother was still pregnant, and arranged a home delivery to conceal the birth of the child.
Although the identities of the couple have been withheld, the mother used the money received to purchase shoes, an iPhone, and other items. The parents of the infant girl claim they wanted to provide “a better upbringing that their financial circumstances could permit."
The amount of the money received by the parents has not yet been confirmed, but online postings suggest the parents’ request was approximately $8,200.
