China refuses visa to Thai supporter of Dalai Lama

The Chinese government has continued to take an antagonistic posture towards His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his supporters. Phayul.com reported on April 13, 2014, China has denied a visa for a Thai activist supporter of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Sulak Sivaraksa, a prominent Thai activist and social worker, has been denied a visa to visit his ancestral home in China by the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok.

Sivaraksa was apparently denied a visa to visit China because of his association with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader His Holinesss the Dalai Lama. Sivaraksa has said it is clear the Chinese government feels uncomfortable with his support for the Dalai Lama but that he always insists on standing by righteousness. Sivaraksa was planning to visit the homeland of his ancestors in Taechiew in eastern Guangdong province
in China.

Sivaraksa and the Dalai Lama met in 2008 when he led a 17-member delegation from Thailand on a visit to
Dharamshala in India. He expressed his support for the Dalai Lama in public saying that he offers perhaps the one voice leading the world. Sivaraksa feels when you fear ‘a man of love’ such as the Dalai Lama than clearly there is something wrong with you.

Sivaraksa is a veteran social campaigner, Buddhist activist and writer reports the International Network of Engaged Buddhists. The Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has called him one of the most influential thinkers in all of Asia. The refusal of a visa for Sivaraksa to visit China makes it perfectly clear that
the situation between Beijing and the supporters of His Holiness the Dalai Lama remains as tense as ever.
