China opens college with a goal of producing anti-splittist monks

There continues to be reports of tensions between Tibetan Buddhists and the government of China. Now reports that China has opened a college which has an aim of producing anti-splittist monks has Buddhists in Syracuse perplexed and concerned about what this means for Buddhist monks who have been protesting religious oppression by China.

Tendar Tsering has reported for Phayul.com "China inaugurates multimillion dollar college to produce anti-splittist monks." China recently inaugurated its first ever official Buddhist college which is aimed at producing “anti-splittist monks”. This has come at a time of a series of self-immolations in Tibet by Tibetans studying in monastic institutions who have been protesting what they feel are oppressive Chinese government policies in dealing with Buddhist religious freedoms.

Xinhua, which is China’s official news agency, has said that 150 students from various Tibetan Buddhist sects have enrolled in the Tibet Buddhist Theological Institute, which is also called the Tibet Buddhist College and Tibetan Buddhism University, in Nyerthang near Lhasa, Tibet’s ancient capital city. It has not been clear whether the students, which include Tulkus (reincarnate lamas), voluntarily sought admission or were forced by Chinese authorities to enroll in this new college. Xinhua also noted that along with Buddhist and cultural studies, it is has been made mandatory for the monks to take legal studies.

Zhu Weiqun, China’s vice minister of the United Front Work Department, has said that this new college will strive at modernizing the Tibetan Buddhist system and will fight against the activities of the splittists, which is a term used by China to describe pro-Tibet forces. Weiqun has been quoted as saying “The college is expected to meet the demand of bringing normal order to Tibetan Buddhism, further enhance the standardization and modernization of Tibetan Buddhist study system, cultivate more Buddhist talents and effectively fight against splitists' attempts to infiltrate through religious fields.” This development in China's fight against the independence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his teachings has Buddhist scholars worldwide not certain in what directions the future of Buddhism will now go.
