China dam collapse engulfs Urumqi village in 100000 cu meters of freezing water (Photos)

In Xinjiang Province, a retaining wall on Lianfeng Reservoir outside of Urumqi collapsed inundating Kaziwan village with freezing water on Saturday, Feb 2. As much as 100,000 cubic meters of quick-freezing water engulfed nearby Kaziwan, as temperatures hovered around -15 C (5 F).

A 65-year-old villager drowned and 20 residents suffered lower-leg frostbite after standing in freezing water waiting for rescue.

“Many of the 20 injured, ages 4 months to 78 years, were treated for frozen feet and ankles,” a director from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University told the Global Times.
