The tensions between Tibetan protesters and the authorities in China remains intense today. Now feelings that things may get worse in the aftermath of threats by China to resolutely crack down on unrest in Tibet has lead to increasing feelings of despair and prayers for the well being of the Tibetans among Buddhists in Syracuse. The Tibet Sun has reported "China to 'resolutely crack down' on Tibetan unrest."
On Tuesday China said it would “resolutely crack down” on any attempts to instigate violence in Tibetan-inhabited areas, where the Chinese authorities have launched a deadly clampdown on protesters. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin has said “The Chinese government will resolutely crack down on any attempt to incite violence, disrupt national unity and territorial integrity in accordance with law.” In the aftermath of a series of self-immolations in Tibet and the Chinese government has launched a huge clampdown on Tibetan-inhabited areas, with increasing surveillance of monasteries and setting up more road blocks.
China has been accusing overseas organizations which are pro independence for Tibet of distorting facts about what has happened in Sichuan, while also blaming the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, of fomenting Tibetan unrest. Tibetans have been accusing Beijing of curbing religious freedoms and eroding their culture and language. Meanwhile Beijing insists that Tibetans enjoy religious freedom and have benefited from improved living standards brought on by China’s economic reforms. Nevertheless, it appears Tibetans are under siege from the Chinese authorities at this time.
