A much cooler, and more autumn-like airmass was encroaching upon the Capital Region this morning. The leading edge of this cooler airmass was sweeping across western and central New York in the form of a cold front. This frontal system will sweep through the area prior to the lunch hour. The moisture associated with the front is paltry at best, as the better atmospheric dynamics have been shunted well north of the region. Some showers may occur north and west of the area, but increasing cloud cover should be most, if not all, of what the Capital Region experiences with this front’s passage.
A chilly airmass will be in place behind the system, with brisk west to northwest winds picking up, driving the cooler air over the relatively warm waters of lakes Erie and Ontario. This will set the stage for lake effect clouds and some shower activity for the next couple days. Though the clouds may make it into the Capital Region from time to time, and a stray shower may as well, the more pronounced lake effect activity looks to remain closer to the lee of the lakes, and not so much inland.
Temperatures will take a nose dive through the next couple days as the chilly airmass settles into the area. Overnight lows look to dip to near or below the freezing mark. Subsequent frost and freeze conditions are looking more likely for the immediate Capital District over the next few overnight periods, thus, by definition, ending the growing season.
