Horrific details were released on Oct. 24 regarding the tragic and brutal murder of beloved teacher Colleen Ritzer from Danvers High School in Danvers, Mass. One of Ritzer’s 14-year-old students, Philip Chism, was charged with his teacher’s Tuesday night murder.
CNN reported that Ritzer was killed in one of the school’s bathrooms on Tuesday with a box cutter. Allegedly, Chism followed his teacher into the unlocked bathroom, punched her a few times, and then finished her off with the box cutter around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
What happened to her body afterward? It was stashed in a recycling bin, rolled outside, then dumped about 20 feet into woods behind the northeastern Massachusetts high school's athletic fields, adds another source. It was left there -- not buried, not even covered.
After killing Colleen Ritzer and dumping her body down an embankment in the woods, Philip Chism who had been reported missing Tuesday evening, reportedly changed his clothes, visited a fast food restaurant, went to a movie, and was seen walking down the road in the next town over from Danvers around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Police picked up Chism walking down that dark road, and quickly put his story together with Ritzer’s, who had also been reported missing.
Between police interviews with Chism, and surveillance footage obtained at the murder site, police arrested Chism for Ritzer’s murder.
Police still have no clear motive as to why Chism killed his 24-year-old teacher, who has been described as a young lady with a great smile who always went above and beyond on behalf of her students.
"It's just surreal how quickly someone can go, and how much we take for granted every day," said Danvers High student Chris Weimert. "(Ritzer was) the nicest teacher you could ever have. I can't believe it."
As of today, Chism remains in prison without bail. If a Mass. grand jury indicts the 14-year-old on first- or second-degree murder charges, he’ll be tried as an adult due to his age and according to Mass. criminal law.
